Happy Chinese New year everyone! It is the Year of the Rat, and also Chinese year 4706! YAY! I'm so excited! Just some random facts about today that you might want to know!
It is unlucky to clean today! The new year marks new luck, and by cleaning out your house, you clean out all the luck! (Uh-oh!)
Wearing the color red scared off spirits!
Fireworks, especially red ones, help to scare off spirits too!
Lucky Red envelopes are given to children and unmarried peoples to bring them good luck! Inside these envelopes there is often money, and sometimes chocolate! (Two envelopes are customary, and it is common to get a multiple of 8, because it is a lucky number)
You get to wear new clothes! (New clothes bring in the new year!)
It's unlucky to cook today, and so often, food is made a day in advance!
Open doors and windows today! It tells good luck to enter!
Do not buy new shoes today! (As random as that is!) But if you recently got new shoes (before today!) wear them! Wearing new shoes represents stepping on gossips!
